Adam Johann von Krusenstern was a Russian explorer and admiral who is best known for his pioneering voyage around the world in 1803-1806. He was born in 1770 in the city of Reval, now known as Tallinn, Estonia. His father was a German-born merchant and his mother was a Russian noblewoman.
Krusenstern was educated at the Naval Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg, where he studied navigation and seamanship. After graduating in 1787, he joined the Russian Imperial Navy and served in the Russo-Swedish War of 1788-1790. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1790 and was assigned to the Black Sea Fleet.
In 1793, Krusenstern was sent on a diplomatic mission to Constantinople, where he met with the Ottoman Sultan and negotiated a trade agreement between Russia and the Ottoman Empire. He also visited the Mediterranean and the Middle East, and was impressed by the cultures and civilizations he encountered.
In 1798, Krusenstern was appointed commander of the Russian Navy's first circumnavigation of the world. The expedition was intended to promote trade and diplomatic relations between Russia and the countries of the Pacific Ocean. The voyage began in August 1803 and lasted until August 1806. During the voyage, Krusenstern and his crew visited the Hawaiian Islands, the Marquesas Islands, the Society Islands, the Sandwich Islands, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, and the coast of China.
Krusenstern's voyage was a great success and he was awarded the Order of St. Anne for his achievements. He also wrote a book about his voyage, which was published in 1811 and became a bestseller.
Krusenstern returned to Russia in 1807 and was appointed commander of the Black Sea Fleet. He was promoted to admiral in 1809 and was appointed commander of the Baltic Fleet in 1811. He retired from the navy in 1817 and was appointed director of the Russian-American Company, which was responsible for the colonization of Alaska.
