Charles Gwynn was an American professional baseball player who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. He was born on April 26, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Gwynn was a right-handed batter and a right-handed thrower. He was known for his ability to hit for average and his defensive prowess.
Gwynn began his professional baseball career in 1945 when he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers. He was assigned to the minor league team in Newport News, Virginia. Gwynn quickly rose through the ranks and made his major league debut in April of 1948. He played in the outfield for the Dodgers and quickly established himself as a reliable hitter. He hit .296 in his rookie season and was named to the National League All-Star team.
Gwynn continued to be a consistent hitter for the Dodgers and was a key part of the team’s success in the 1950s. He was a part of the 1955 World Series championship team and was named to the All-Star team in 1956. Gwynn was also a part of the 1959 World Series championship team. He was a five-time All-Star and was named to the All-Star team in each of his last five seasons with the Dodgers.
In 1960, Gwynn was traded to the San Diego Padres. He continued to be a reliable hitter and was named to the All-Star team in 1961. He was also named the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1966. Gwynn was a part of the Padres’ first-ever World Series appearance in 1984. He retired after the 1986 season with a career batting average of .338.
Gwynn was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007. He was the first player to be inducted from the San Diego Padres. Gwynn was also inducted into the Padres Hall of Fame in 1999.
