Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden was an American geologist and explorer who is best known for his pioneering surveys of the Rocky Mountains in the late 19th century. Hayden was born in Westfield, Massachusetts in 1829 and was the eldest of eight children. He attended the local schools and then went on to study medicine at Williston Seminary in Easthampton, Massachusetts. After graduating in 1853, he moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to practice medicine.
