Gavriil Pribylov

Gavriil Pribylov was a Russian explorer and navigator who made significant contributions to the exploration of the Arctic and Pacific Oceans. He was born in 1779 in the village of Krasnoyarsk, in the Russian Empire. He was the son of a peasant family and received only a basic education.

At the age of 18, Pribylov joined the Russian Navy and was assigned to the frigate “Kamchatka”. He served on the ship for two years, during which time he gained experience in navigation and sailing. In 1802, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and was assigned to the frigate “Kamchatka” for a second time. During this voyage, he explored the Arctic Ocean and the Bering Strait.
