Jim Whittaker

Jim Whittaker is an American mountaineer, author, and businessman who is best known for being the first American to summit Mount Everest. He was born in Seattle, Washington in 1929 and grew up in the nearby town of Edmonds. He was an avid outdoorsman from a young age, and his love of the outdoors led him to pursue a career in mountaineering.

Whittaker began his mountaineering career in the 1950s, when he joined the Mountaineers, a Seattle-based mountaineering club. He quickly became an accomplished climber, and in 1953, he became the first American to summit Mount Rainier. This accomplishment earned him a spot on the first American expedition to attempt to summit Mount Everest in 1963.

The expedition was led by Norman Dyhrenfurth and included Whittaker, Barry Bishop, Lute Jerstad, and Tom Hornbein. The team set out in March of 1963 and reached the summit of Everest on May 1st. Whittaker was the first American to reach the summit, and he was also the first person to plant an American flag on the summit.

Whittaker has also written several books about his mountaineering experiences, including “A Life on the Edge” and “The Mountain World.” He has also served as a consultant for several films about mountaineering, including “Everest” and “Vertical Limit.”

In addition to his mountaineering career, Whittaker has also been involved in business. He founded a company called Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) in 1938, which is now one of the largest outdoor gear retailers in the United States. He also served as the CEO of the company from 1978 to 1993.

Whittaker has been honored for his accomplishments in mountaineering and business. He was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1975, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003. He has also been inducted into the National Mountaineering Hall of Fame and the American Mountaineering Hall of Fame.
