Jim Whittaker is an American mountaineer, author, and businessman who is best known for being the first American to summit Mount Everest. He was born in Seattle, Washington in 1929 and grew up in the nearby town of Edmonds. He was inducted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1975, and he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003.
