John Oxley was an explorer, surveyor, and public servant who made a significant contribution to the exploration and settlement of Australia. He was born in 1783 in Yorkshire, England, and was educated at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. He joined the Royal Navy in 1799 and served in the Napoleonic Wars. In 1802, he was appointed as a surveyor in the colony of New South Wales.
Oxley's first major exploration was in 1817, when he was sent to explore the interior of New South Wales. He was accompanied by George Evans and Hamilton Hume, and they travelled from Bathurst to the Lachlan River. They then followed the Lachlan River to its junction with the Murrumbidgee River, and then followed the Murrumbidgee to its junction with the Murray River. This journey was the first successful exploration of the interior of New South Wales.
