Jorge de Menezes

Jorge de Menezes was a Portuguese explorer and navigator who was born in the late 15th century. He is best known for his exploration of the Atlantic Ocean and his discovery of the Azores Islands. He is also credited with the discovery of the Madeira Islands and the Cape Verde Islands.

Jorge de Menezes was born in 1460 in the Portuguese city of Porto. He was the son of a wealthy merchant and was educated in the arts and sciences. He was also trained in navigation and sailing. At the age of twenty, he joined the Portuguese navy and was soon sent on a mission to explore the Atlantic Ocean.

In 1482, Jorge de Menezes set sail from Lisbon with a fleet of four ships. He was accompanied by a crew of experienced sailors and navigators. The fleet sailed south along the coast of Africa and eventually reached the Canary Islands. From there, they continued south and eventually reached the Azores Islands.

The Azores Islands were uninhabited at the time and the Portuguese were the first Europeans to discover them. Jorge de Menezes and his crew explored the islands and named them after the Portuguese king, John II. They also claimed the islands for Portugal.

After exploring the Azores, Jorge de Menezes and his crew continued their voyage and eventually reached the Madeira Islands. They named the islands after the Portuguese word for wood, “madeira”. They also claimed the islands for Portugal.

The next stop on the voyage was the Cape Verde Islands. The islands were uninhabited at the time and the Portuguese were the first Europeans to discover them. Jorge de Menezes and his crew explored the islands and named them after the Portuguese explorer, Bartolomeu Dias. They also claimed the islands for Portugal.

Jorge de Menezes and his crew then sailed back to Portugal. He was hailed as a hero upon his return and was given a pension by the Portuguese king. He was also given the title of “Admiral of the Ocean”.

Jorge de Menezes continued to explore the Atlantic Ocean for the rest of his life. He made several more voyages to the Azores, Madeira, and Cape Verde Islands. He also explored the coast of Africa and the Caribbean. He died in 1521 at the age of sixty-one.
