Martim Afonso de Sousa was a Portuguese explorer and navigator who is credited with being the first European to explore the coast of Brazil. He was born in 1490 in the Portuguese city of Viseu and was the son of a nobleman. He was educated in the court of King Manuel I of Portugal and was a skilled navigator and cartographer.
