Sir John Ross was a Scottish explorer and naval officer who is best known for his Arctic explorations. He was born in 1777 in Balsarroch, Scotland, and was the son of a naval officer. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 13 and served in the Napoleonic Wars. After the war, he was assigned to the Arctic and was part of the first expedition to reach the North Magnetic Pole in 1831.
Ross's first Arctic expedition was in 1818, when he was sent to search for the Northwest Passage. He was unsuccessful in finding the passage, but he did discover the Boothia Peninsula and the Magnetic North Pole. He also charted much of the Arctic coastline and discovered many islands. He returned to England in 1820 and was knighted for his achievements.

He was unsuccessful in finding Franklin, but he did discover the Ross Sea and the Ross Ice Shelf. He also charted much of the Arctic coastline and discovered many islands.
