Vicente Yáñez Pinzón was a Spanish explorer and navigator who is best known for being the first European to set foot on the South American continent. He was born in Palos de la Frontera, Spain in 1460 and was the son of a wealthy merchant. He was educated in the arts and sciences and was an avid sailor from a young age.
At the age of twenty-five, Pinzón was chosen by Christopher Columbus to join his second voyage to the New World. Pinzón was the captain of the Pinta, one of the three ships that made up the expedition. During the voyage, Pinzón and his crew explored the Caribbean islands and the coast of Central America. On August 3, 1498, Pinzón and his crew became the first Europeans to set foot on the South American continent.
After the voyage, Pinzón returned to Spain and was rewarded with a large estate and a knighthood. He was also appointed as the mayor of Palos de la Frontera. In 1508, Pinzón was chosen to lead an expedition to explore the coast of South America. He sailed along the coast of Brazil and Venezuela and discovered the Amazon River. He also explored the coast of Colombia and Panama.
In 1513, Pinzón was chosen to lead an expedition to explore the Gulf of Mexico. He sailed along the coast of Florida and discovered the Florida Keys. He also explored the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula and discovered the Yucatan Channel. Pinzón returned to Spain in 1514 and was rewarded with a large estate and a knighthood.
Pinzón was also involved in the conquest of Cuba. He was appointed as the governor of the island in 1518 and served in this position until 1521. During his tenure, he established the first Spanish settlement in Cuba and explored the island.
Pinzón died in 1524 at the age of sixty-four. He was buried in the Church of San Francisco in Palos de la Frontera. He is remembered as one of the most important explorers of the New World and his legacy lives on in the many places he discovered.
