Yakov Sannikov

Yakov Sannikov is a Russian explorer who is best known for his exploration of the Arctic Ocean and the discovery of the Sannikov Land archipelago. He was born in 1773 in the village of Kholmogory in the Arkhangelsk region of Russia. He was the son of a peasant family and received only a basic education.

At the age of 18, Sannikov joined the Russian Navy and served as a midshipman on a voyage to the White Sea. During this voyage, he became interested in the Arctic and its potential for exploration. After his return to Russia, he was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to the Russian Navy's Arctic expedition.
