Adrian V (1276)

Adrian V, born Ottobuono de' Fieschi, was a Pope of the Roman Catholic Church who reigned from July 11 to August 18, 1276. He was the only Pope to be elected in the same year as his predecessor, Pope Gregory X, and the only Pope to die within a month of his election. Adrian V was a member of the powerful Fieschi family, which had produced several cardinals and a Pope, Innocent IV.

Adrian V was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1210. He was educated at the University of Bologna and was ordained a priest in 1245. He was appointed a cardinal by Pope Innocent IV in 1251 and was sent to England to negotiate a peace treaty between King Henry III and the barons. He was successful in his mission and was rewarded with the bishopric of Albenga.
