Francis (2013—)

Francis is the current Pope of the Catholic Church, the 266th pope in the history of the Church. He was elected on March 13, 2013, and is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas, and the first pope from the Southern Hemisphere. He is the first non-European pope in over 1,200 years.

Pope Francis was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He was the eldest of five children born to Italian immigrants. His father was an accountant and his mother was a housewife. He was raised in a devout Catholic family and attended Catholic schools. He was ordained a priest in 1969 and was appointed auxiliary bishop of Buenos Aires in 1992. In 1998, he was appointed archbishop of Buenos Aires and in 2001, he was made a cardinal.
