Marcellus II, born Marcello Cervini degli Spannochi, was an Italian cardinal and pope who reigned from April 9, 1555 to May 1, 1555. He was the last pope to be elected by the College of Cardinals before the introduction of the papal conclave. Marcellus was born in Montepulciano, Italy in 1501. He was the son of a noble family and was educated at the University of Perugia. He was ordained a priest in 1525 and was appointed Bishop of Nicastro in 1540. He was later appointed Cardinal-Priest of Santa Maria in Trastevere in 1541.
