Theodore I (642-49)

Theodore I, also known as Theodore of Amasea, was a Byzantine emperor who reigned from 642 to 649. He was the first of the Heraclian dynasty, which would rule the Byzantine Empire for the next two centuries. Theodore was born in Amasea, a city in the Pontus region of Anatolia, in the late sixth century. He was the son of a local nobleman, and was educated in Constantinople. He rose to prominence in the court of Emperor Heraclius, and was appointed as the commander of the imperial guard in 629.
